The Liverpool midfielder did not have a pleasant debut at Qatar 2022

After the complications that the England team presented during the first 45 minutes against the United States, the coach of the three lions, Gareth Southgate, decided to make changes that corrected those mistakes in midfield, being very controversial and criticized the change of Jude Bellingham to give entry to a veteran of Liverpool as Jordan Henderson.

For the second match against the country of the stars and stripes, neither Jude Bellingham nor Mason Mounts were able to perform as well as they did against Iran, with both midfielders being repeatedly overrun by a good US attacking unit led by Christian Pulisic, This caused the English coach to make a decision to give Henderson a place for more than 20 minutes, bringing on a player who, although he does not have great physical characteristics due to his age, made up for it with a discreet performance supported by his experience.

The decision taken by Southgate was surprising and hard to understand for those watching the game, as the decision to leave out your greatest midfield gem to make way for a veteran was certainly not a symptom of good management, even in the changes. The substitution caused a huge controversy that was directed against Hendo, as the enraged England fans did not see how the Liverpool player could help secure victory against the United States.

Although the decision made by the English manager did not turn out badly, the Reds player could do little or nothing with the game so late in the game and with a very worn out squad, Klopp was surely furious with Gareth's decision to give him minutes to try to save a ship that was sinking with him on board.

Henderson came on in the second half

Despite 2022 being a year in which the new stars took over the World Cup, there are still cases of national teams that continue to use their experienced players as a lethal weapon at certain times, with manager Gareth Southgate choosing the worst moment to use the Anfield midfielder, as his image was unfairly damaged by an enraged nation who could not believe how a CONCACAF team was making a game difficult for them and earning a valuable point.
