Klopp's tremendous scolding of one of his players against Derby County, not Firmino

No matter the competition, this player keeps making mistakes

No matter the competition, this player keeps making mistakes

Liverpool's Carabao Cup clash with Derby County was in theory a not-so-complicated challenge, and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had the audacity to use some substitute players and a few youth players to try to solve the game, although the situation began to get out of hand when the goalless draw persisted after 75 minutes, and he was forced to make changes which led to a 3-2 penalty shootout win.

Among this mixture of experienced players and debutants, the defensive sector was entirely in the hands of Joe Gómez, a player who, despite being entrusted by his manager as the team's captain, showed certain shortcomings throughout his participation that caused the German manager's evident anger from the bench, as it was not to be expected that the most regular man in minutes was capable of failing in a relatively simple match.

Klopp's reaction to Derby County manager's attitude

Although Derby County are a team infinitely inferior in squad and football to Liverpool, this group showed they knew how to exploit the shortcomings of the substitutes and youth players at all times, for contrary to expectations, the Rams found those spaces to offend their opponents and cause Gomez to be overrun in that final third of the pitch, being saved on a couple of occasions even by substitute goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Unlike the blunders that Liverpool's number two shirt made against the likes of West Ham United and Leeds United in the Premier League, his interventions did not end up directly affecting the scoreline and putting his team at a considerable disadvantage, but the Briton's failings in the Carabo Cup clash have made it clear to Jurgen Klopp that his defensive back-up will have to be Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Gomez underperformed again

Although the result was positive and Liverpool beat their opponents, Gomez has not managed to achieve a regularity that allows him to establish himself as a quality substitute that Klopp can count on whenever his centre-backs are not available, because through bad plays and interventions he has shown that rather than a support he is a disadvantage that can change the course of the game but against his team, having perhaps the Briton a new opportunity in the next round of the EFL Cup to clean up his image.
