The Scotsman pulled out of his side's game against Spain with an injury

With goals from Morata and Sancet, La Roja handed Scotland their first defeat in European qualifying. The Spanish national team defeated Scotland 2-0 on Thursday at the Estadio La Cartuja in Seville to earn three important points in the qualifiers for Euro 2024. The Iberians also handed the Scots their first defeat of the tournament. After a goalless first half, although with the home side coming closer, the second half was a rollercoaster of emotions. As in the first half, Spain had more possession and more chances, but Scotland were clear on the ball after Dani Carvajal was fouled outside the box.

The Spanish backline waited for the cross, but Scott McTominay had a direct shot on goal and his shot took an excellent dip to sneak inside Unai Simon's far post in the 60th minute. However, it was reviewed on VAR and disallowed for an apparent foul on the Spanish goalkeeper. It was later reported that the goal was disallowed for offside. One way or another, the disallowed goal gave life to Spain, who managed to win thanks to Luis de la Fuente's changes. First up was Jesus Navas, who with five minutes on the pitch sent in a cross from the right flank for Alvaro Morata.

The Spanish captain managed to sneak through the defenders and with a lofted shot beat Angus Gunn, who was unable to react to the proximity of the shot. Despite the disadvantage, Scotland did not give up and searched hard for an equaliser. But, after a sequence of misfortunes, La Roja's second fell to seal the game. After a slip by Aaron Hickey, Joselu, who came on a minute earlier, recovered the ball on the right flank and sent in a low cross. Oihan Sancet, also a second-half substitute and a debutant with the senior team, was undeterred by the sweeping challenge and sent the ball into the back of the net.

Robertson's injury

The bad news for Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp was that captain Andy Robertson was forced off with a shoulder injury. According to journalist Ian Doyle, Andy Robertson potentially facing spell on sidelines after suffering a shoulder injury that has forced him off playing for Scotland in Spain this evening. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be less than impressed. There is still no official word on the injury but he will be a doubt for the match against Everton next week as he is expected to be out for at least ten days. Andy Robertson dislocated his shoulder against Spain. He will fly home and undergo a scan on Friday
