The Reds will play Tottenham on Sunday as they look to break their doldrums

Tottenham's South Korean attacker Son Heung-min is to undergo surgery to "consolidate a fracture around his left eye" suffered on Tuesday in a Champions League match against Marseille, the London club announced on Wednesday: "Following the operation, Son will begin his recovery with our medical team," Spurs added, without specifying whether the player's participation in the World Cup in Qatar, which starts in two and a half weeks, will be possible.

Son Heung-min had to leave Tuesday's game before the half-hour mark, visibly concussed, after a collision with Marseille defender Chancel Mbemba when the match was goalless. The Londoners eventually won 2-1, finishing top of their Champions League group. After the match, Tottenham assistant coach Cristian Stellini, who replaced the suspended Antonio Conte, said Son was doing better and celebrated the win with his team-mates.

South Korea make their debut against Uruguay on 24 November, leaving just three weeks for the Asians' star to recover. Son Heung-min (30) is the captain and emblem of his national team, for whom he has made 106 appearances and scored 35 goals. Group H of the World Cup is completed by Portugal and Ghana.

In 2021, Belgium's Kevin De Bruyne also suffered an orbital fracture in Manchester City's Champions League final loss to Chelsea at the end of May, and then could be at the European Championship in June. He reappeared for Belgium's second match on 17 June, just over two weeks later.

Tough loss for Tottenham against Liverpool

This is beneficial news for Liverpool as they will face Tottenham on Sunday. The Korean is one of the London side's best players and now manager Antonio Conte will have to replace him immediately to compete in the Premier League. This will allow Jürgen Klopp to take an even more decisive approach to the league clash as he looks to end the losing streak and start climbing the table.
