Beating Serie A leaders Napoli, who had won 15 and drawn twice in all competitions so far, was far from straightforward. The Italians could have opened the scoring in this match had a VAR intervention not disallowed Leo Ostigard's header for an infinitesimal offside early in the second half.

In the end, however, Egypt's Mohamed Salah scored the opener in the 85th minute after a rebound in the box following a header from Uruguay's Darwin Núñez. In stoppage time, Nunez scored the second goal, initially disallowed for offside before VAR established he was in a legal position when Dutchman Virgil van Dijk headed the ball home.

Two late goals allowed Liverpool to inflict Napoli's first defeat of the season on Tuesday, 2-0, on the final day of Champions League Group A, although the Italians finished top of the group. Mexico's Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano was a substitute and came on after 70 minutes. Both teams finish with a record of five wins and one defeat, but the Reds needed a four-goal win to overtake the Neapolitans after their 4-1 loss to the same opponents in the Champions League opener.

But the mere fact that they are assured of qualification - third-placed Ajax Amsterdam have six points - in what has been a difficult season in the Premier League shows that the Champions League is the favourite competition for the English side, three times finalists in the last five seasons.

Klopp likes Kvaratskhelia

In a press conference afterwards, Reds manager Jürgen Klopp hinted that Firmino could start against Tottenham on Sunday despite his poor display. He also praised Napoli's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia: "He's a good player, . A really difficult one. Really quick. When he has the advantage of the first movement, he's gone. He has speed, he is cheeky. He goes inside and outside. He is on fire and didn't get frustrated."
