Alexander-Arnold, current vice-captain of Anfield, is one of three stars, alongside Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, whose contracts expire this summer. The 26-year-old has long been courted by Real Madrid and could leave Merseyside for the Spanish club on a free transfer at the end of the season if no new deal is reached.

Liverpool’s Contingency Plan

Although Alexander-Arnold’s departure is not yet guaranteed, Liverpool has already started implementing a contingency plan and has identified Joshua Kimmich, the Bayern Munich and Germany star, as a potential replacement. According to Sky Sports Switzerland, the Reds are in “direct contact” with Kimmich’s camp, and Liverpool’s interest could undermine Bayern’s chances of renewing the German international’s expiring contract.

Possible Free Transfer or January Fee

The 29-year-old would also be available on a free transfer this summer, but the report suggests that Liverpool could even spend €25 million this January to secure Kimmich’s services.

Kimmich’s Versatility

Kimmich’s versatility makes him an attractive option for Liverpool’s recruitment team. The German player is highly capable of playing as a holding midfielder, but he has also been deployed in central defence on several occasions throughout his career, providing Jürgen Klopp’s team with multiple tactical options should the transfer materialise.
