Liverpool to play Real Madrid in Champions League last 16

Real Madrid secured a valuable 2-0 win at home to Valencia in their LaLiga Matchday 17 fixture to maintain a reasonable five-point gap to Barcelona as the first round of the league season draws to a close.

Los Blancos had some difficulties at the start of the game, when the VAR took a goal away from Antonio Rüdiger at the end of the first half. However, at the start of the second half, they only needed three minutes to settle the game, with two touches: first a spectacular shot from Marco Asensio that left goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili motionless and then, when the goal was still being celebrated, a great counter-attack from Vinicius that left the entire Orange team behind and allowed him to finish past the goalkeeper.

The bad news of the game was that Madrid lost two key players to injury, first Eder MIlitao, who came off in the 36th minute, and then Karim Benzema, who left the field with a thigh injury shortly after the 2-0 scoreline. Both injuries come just before the fixture list starts to pile up: La Liga, Copa del Rey, Club World Cup and Champions League. A madness of travel, weather, pitch and intensity changes, all starting at the end of this month.

Relief for Klopp

Although Jürgen Klopp, coach of Liverpool, Real Madrid's Champions League rivals, has not spoken at a press conference, several local media reports point out that these injuries in the Spanish team are a real relief for the Reds, who also have several injured players such as Luis Diaz, Virgil Van Dijk, Diogo Jota, as well as the Brazilian Roberto Firmino.
