Liverpool have depth in all areas of the pitch, but nowhere is the talent more even in comparison with each other than at centre-back. Virgil van Dijk is the number one not just for Liverpool, but in world football. But there is little to split Ibrahima Konaté, Joël Matip and Joe Gomez. Konaté started the Champions League final but Matip is excellent too, while Gomez is now completely over his long-term injury problem and has had almost a full pre-season.
Something think that, Joël Matip in the last game of last season against Real Madrid. The best season overall but understood why Ibrahima Konaté was prefered. Matip is that can bring the ball out from the back brilliantly, but he is also a superb defender. Long term, Konaté probably has a higher ceiling, but right now, Matip is the better option and the least likely to make an error.
Of course, for Konaté to develop, he needs minutes. Only by playing do you improve. But there is plenty of time for that to happen across the course of the campaign. With five substitutions available in the Premier League, we might even see a bit more rotation in games in areas that would normally expect to play the full 90 minutes, injuries aside.
Others are of the opinion thath, Matip may have experience, but with Liverpool persisting with the high line, I would prefer Konaté's pace alongside Virgil van Dijk at the centre of defence. The Frenchman lost just one game that he featured in for Liverpool, and unfortunately that game just happened to be the Champions League final, but overall, even in that game, Konaté's performance was the silver lining for Liverpool.
