Cameroon defender Joel Matip performed poorly in the match against Brighton where Liverpool were unable to show their full potential. While the poor play was from virtually all players, Matip was the most evident especially after a clear mistake in the first goal of the game.

Matip formed the central defence for this match alongside defender Ibrahima Konaté, while Trent Alexander Arnold and Andy Robertson were at full-back. Reds' German coach Jurgen Klopp was also dissatisfied with Matip's performance and so replaced him with Joe Gomez.

With Virgil Van Dijk's injury that will keep him out for several weeks and he could miss the Champions League clash with Real Madrid, Liverpool's options in central defence have been reduced. However, star man Mohamed Salah has shown who is his favourite to remain in the starting line-up.

It was a few days ago that the Egyptian king posted a picture with defender Konaté on his social media. This image went viral because they are two players very much loved by the Reds fans. Konaté is one of the pillars in the defence and Matip could leave his place for Joe Gomez.
