Injury curse leaves Liverpool with seven players out of action

In addition to a performance that does not convince their fans, Liverpool have to deal with the curse of injuries. During the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, Portuguese rookie Fabio Carvalho left the pitch after a collision with an opponent injured him and prevented him from playing. The severity of the injury is not yet known, but he joins a long list of casualties.

The 19-year-old midfielder made his first start for the Reds in place of captain Jordan Henderson who was injured in Thursday's game against Newcastle. He joined Anfiled in the summer for $7.5 million from Fulham and is one of the club's future prospects. He scored his second goal for the club on Thursday in the win over the Magpies.

Before being injured, the 2002-born had a good game in the midfield alongside Brazil’s Fabinho and also rookie Harvey Elliot. During his minutes on the court, he tried to team up with Colombian Luis Díaz and Uruguayan Darwin Núñez, who had the clearest move of the first half in a shot blocked by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Carvalho joins a long list of injuries that includes captain Jordan Henderson and Spaniard Thiago Alcatara. Henderson could return in the next few days and Thiago has not played since the 2-2 draw with Fulham on 6 August when he picked up a hamstring problem. He is expected to return in a few weeks' time. 

Other injured players

In addition to these three players with medical problems, there are also Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and French defender Ibrahim Konaté. The injured midfielders are Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Guinea's Naby Keita, who picked up an injury on 20 August and could return in the next few days. The good news is that Diogo Jota and Joel Matip are fit to play.
