Liverpool and Chelsea could only manage a drab 0-0 draw, to the satisfaction of neither side, in the opening game of the 21st Premier League matchday. While Liverpool provisionally gained one place (8th) by overtaking Brentford on goal difference, Chelsea remain 10th, with the three teams level on 29 points, albeit nine points off the top four.

The game, however, seemed to start brightly with Kai Havertz's goal for Chelsea, from a corner, but it was disallowed after VAR was consulted, for offside. This early warning did not encourage Liverpool to take risks, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Darwin Nunez all on the bench at the start of the game, while 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic started in midfield.

Chelsea were a little braver but ineffective and despite a Benoit Badiashile header at the far post, safely repelled by Alisson (32), the first half was worthy of a mid-table match. But 0-0 ended up being a logical scoreline after the performance of both teams, paralysed by the fear of individual errors and neither side looking capable of showing their best form again any time soon.

Caoimhin Kelleher to leave to free up funds

In the last few hours, journalist James Pearce has reported that Liverpool are looking to sell Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in order to free up funds to use in the transfer market to get a good player. Kelleher is a contender to leave Liverpool due to his desire to play more regularly and the fact that there are not many avenues to raise significant amounts of money from selling players on the fringes of the squad. The 24-year-old Irishman has only played two games this season, both in the cup, where he has looked good. He was part of Liverpool's Champions League and Premier League titles as a substitute goalkeeper, as well as shining in the FA Cup final last season.
