Former Barcelona player Marcos Alonso Peña, father of the Barcelona full-back of the same name, died on Thursday at the age of 63 after a long illness, Barcelona said in a statement. "Marcos Alonso Peña died on Thursday. Born in Santander on October 1, 1959, he was the father of current Barça defender Marcos Alonso," Barcelona said in a statement. Marcos Alonso Peña, also the son of international footballer Marcos Alonso Imaz 'Marquitos', played several seasons in the Primera Division.

He made his debut in the top flight of Spanish football shortly before his 18th birthday with Racing Santander, his hometown team. From Racing, this winger went to Atlético de Madrid, where after five seasons between 1982 and 1987 he signed for Barcelona, where he would spend his best years as a player. With the azulgrana team he won a League (1984/1985), a King's Cup (1983), a Spanish Super Cup (1983) and two League Cups (1983 and 1986).
