He is one of the greatest legends in Liverpool's history and has now lost his job in Saudi Arabia. Al Qadsiah FC, located near the Qatari border, is one of the country's most storied clubs, founded in 1967 and with six titles to its name. The club was recently acquired by Aramco, the world's largest oil company controlled by the Saudi government. After several poor results, Robbie Fowler was sacked as manager.
Míchel replaces an English legend like Robbie Fowler, who was sacked at a club with a distinctly Spanish flavour. The ex-Madrid player arrives with his coaching staff (Juan Carlos Mandía, Kike Sanz and Adrián González) and joins a squad that already has two Spaniards, Yoel and Álvaro González, as well as fitness coach Miguel Ángel García, goalkeeping coach Monchi, rehabilitation coach Jesús David Arco and physiotherapist Álvaro Astolzi, in addition to Pepe Lázaro as fitness coach of the reserve team.
Al Qadsiah's goal is promotion to the Saudi top flight and they are currently in second place. It is also a club focused on the training aspect. "The ownership has a comprehensive development plan that will turn the club into a top level club in a short time," said Carlos Antón, who showed the facilities to Míchel and his coaching staff on Friday.
"In one year a new sports city will be built with eight natural grass pitches, four artificial turf pitches, 7-a-side football, 5-a-side football, as well as all the infrastructure for the first team," says Bargues, who is overseeing the needs of the facility. According to various reports, Fowler will return to England and could either reprise his role as a television commentator or seek a new opportunity as a coach.
