An 89th minute goal by Dutchman Crysencio Summerville and a spectacular performance by Belgian goalkeeper Illan Meslier gave Leeds victory at Anfield and sunk Liverpool, increasingly far from their best and their Premiership goal. Jurgen Klopp's side are looking like they have never been outside the Premiership title contenders, and even outside the European places. They still have the drive, the belief and the pressure but they lack the same success as in the past. They ended up desperately searching for the goalkeeper's mistake, who was the saviour of the visitors, who won a historic victory and climbed out of the relegation zone.

Leeds did not appear to be hampered by their poor position in the table or their win drought. American coach Jesse Marsch's side are part of the relegation zone and arrived at Anfield with six defeats and two draws from their last eight games. They have not won since August, and Leeds were at ease against opponents who are not enjoying a comfortable run in the Premiership. Away from the top of the table they had just four wins from eleven games played. They played rashly. As if the rush to score were equal to the urgency to climb positions.

Despite defeat to Leeds, Liverpool have a new supporter

In addition, they conceded a goal right from the start. It was a glaring mistake by Joe Gomez again. The defender sent a harmless ball past his goalkeeper. But Alisson was out of the frame and overrun him. Attentive was the Spaniard Rodrigo Moreno who only had to push the ball into the net. Liverpool began to press towards Illan Meslier's goal, the real support of his team. Jurgen Klopp's side equalised just before the quarter-hour mark when Andy Robertson's cross from the left was acrobatically picked out by Mohamed Salah and sent into the net.

Leeds did not lose their nerve and could have taken the lead again when Brenden Aaronson's controlled shot crashed against the crossbar. After that, the Reds' monologue increased. Darwin Núñez had the goal in his boots. He faced Meslier who saved the chance. The Belgian goalkeeper stepped up. Liverpool harried the visitors' box as Leeds looked for breathing space on the counter. The final minutes were agonising for Marsch's side as they crouched deep in their own half. But Meslier responded to every chance, as Roberto Firmino did nine minutes from time. Patrick Bamford's through ball into the box gave Crysencio Summerville the chance to fire past Alisson.

'He was that bad'

The player who has received the most criticism so far is Brazilian Fabinho, who has been far from his best form. It was former Leeds player Noel Whelan who was most vocal about the Brazilian midfielder: "I'm surprised he didn't take Fabinho off at half-time, to be honest. He was that bad. "He's not that old, he's not even 30, but I'm thinking, 'it looks like your legs have gone'. The decline could be terminal."
