The 22nd edition of the World Cup in Qatar claimed its victims, selections that were left in the Group Stage being some of them real disappointments, as they arrived at the fair with big cartels and ended up at the bottom of their group. Uruguay, with their constellation of stars, failed to live up to their history and the expectations set by coach Diego Alonso.

Darwin Núñez, a Red's player, was hurt by the way in which his national team was dismissed, where he could contribute little to the attack, playing the three matches of the Group Stage and not scoring a goal. Núñez had the full confidence of Uruguayan coach Alonso who started the first game of the World Cup, then was substituted in the next two games against Portugal and recently Ghana.

Nunez, who came through the youth ranks at Uruguay's Penarol in 2019, then impressed the following season at Spanish side Almeria, where he made a huge 25 million sale to Portuguese side Benfica, where he shone, scoring 34 goals in 41 games, before signing for the Merseyside club for around 85 million, making him one of the most expensive signings of the Jürgen Klopp era.

After the final whistle of German referee Daniel Siebert, the Uruguayan squad was left in tatters, breaking ranks, where the players will take a short break before rejoining their respective clubs. Nunez, who has signed with the Reds until 2028 for a salary of 6 million euros net per season, is set to return to Anfield earlier than expected.

Darwin Nunez returns to Liverpool

Darwin has scored nine goals so far this term for The Pool, including in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Community Shield. Nunez, who before travelling to Qatar scored a brace in the last EPL match against Southampton, a match that excited the South Americans, as they expected Darwin to complement the goal quota with the Charrúa legends Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.
