The transfer market continues to be a hotbed of rumour and speculation, and at the epicentre of attention is Liverpool's persistent interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Donyell Malen. Although the versatile attacker has not fully replicated his outstanding form of his PSV Eindhoven days at the Westfalenstadion, his presence on the pitch has left a sustained impact.
With a total of 24 goals and 16 assists in 91 appearances in all competitions, including four Bundesliga goals this season, Malen has not gone unnoticed. He has also been a constant fixture in Dortmund's Champions League fixtures, a team that has already secured a place in the last 16. While Malen's long-term future at Dortmund is shrouded in some uncertainty due to the expiration of his contract at the end of the 2025-26 season, a recent change of agent further fuels speculation of a possible switch. According to reports from BILD, Liverpool, under Jurgen Klopp, are seriously considering a bid to add Malen to their ranks.
Klopp's interest is not surprising, as the German tactician has expressed his admiration for the 24-year-old's abilities. Although Liverpool already bolstered their attack with the addition of Dominik Szoboszlai in the last transfer window, doubts over Mohamed Salah's long-term future are forcing Klopp to consider possible alternatives.
With Salah's contract with Liverpool set to expire in just over 19 months, decisions must be made quickly. Regardless of Salah's future, Liverpool could finalise a deal for Malen, especially as his new representatives are the same ones who facilitated the transfer of Cody Gakpo to Liverpool almost a year ago. If Dortmund decide to sell Malen, it is expected that they will look to recoup at least the €30m they shelled out for him in July 2021, marking an intriguing new chapter in the transfer market that Liverpool fans will be watching closely.
