Former footballer and coach Marcos Alonso Peña died on Thursday at the age of 63 following an illness, leaving behind a long career on the pitch, as an international and on the bench, as well as a legacy in his children, including the current Barça player of the same name.

Alonso began his professional career with Racing Santander in 1959 after growing up in the ranks of both Racing and Real Madrid. After making his debut for Racing, he had two spells with Atlético de Madrid, the first in 1979, before going on to play for Barcelona and Logroñés.

His greatest successes came with the blaugrana shirt, since as a 'culer', between 1982 and 1987, he won 1 Spanish League, 1 King's Cup, 1 Spanish Super Cup and 2 League Cups; his entire list of honours. In addition, he scored 39 goals in 182 official matches, where his son Marcos Alonso Mendoza now plays.

Marcos Alonso was skilful

At Barça he shared the pitch with Maradona, Schuster, Quini, Carraso and Lineker, all stars with whom he shared glories. Among his most historic performances was the 1983 Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, where he scored a last-gasp goal to give the Catalans the title 2-1. Several reports in Spain say he was as talented as Senegal's Sadio Mané, who shone for Liverpool.
