Pep Guardiola claimed he was pelted with coins in Manchester City's 1-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool on Sunday. The City boss berated a section of the fans at Anfield after Phil Foden's goal was disallowed by video refereeing Guardiola repeatedly gestured towards the fans after the match and later claimed he was pelted with coins.
'Next time they will do better' he told the post-match press conference. 'They didn't make me angry. They'll do it next year. All these coins, they tried, but they didn't make it. They gave the coach years ago. Guardiola was referring to the incident in 2018 when Liverpool fans attacked City's bus ahead of a Champions League clash.
If Salah doesn't improve, this player is ready to shine for Liverpool
Jürgen Klopp's disgraceful decision for the Manchester City game
Asked if it had provoked a reaction from the home fans, Guardiola replied: 'They shout, we shout more.' And he was clearly still annoyed that Foden's goal was disallowed after referee Anthony Taylor blew for a foul on Fabinho in the build-up. 'This is Anfield,' he added. Mo Salah's 76th-minute goal was the decisive moment in a dramatic clash in which manager Jurgen Klopp was sent off for walking out of his technical area in annoyance. With the defeat, Guardiola's side slipped four points behind leaders Arsenal, who beat Leeds 1-0 earlier in the day.
The first half was largely uneventful, apart from the odd chance from the Sky Blues' Norwegian striker. Shortly after returning from the tunnel, Foden wasted no time in beating Alisson. However, on consulting the VAR, the referee disallowed the goal for a previous foul by Haaland on Fabinho. From that moment on, the game would be more open, much more attractive for fans of this discipline.
In the decisive stretch of the match, a long pass by Alisson led to a mistake by Cancelo that Salah capitalised on (1-0). The three points stayed in the coffers of the Anfield side. In particular, in the wake of a rivalry that has provided plenty of excitement and intensity over the last few seasons. At this stage of the season, it is true that Liverpool are far from their best. An issue, of course, that Pep Guardiola's Manchester City were looking to capitalise on.
