Liverpool's Europa League group stage campaign came to a lacklustre conclusion with a 2-1 defeat to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels. Manager Jurgen Klopp opted for a significantly altered team, giving opportunities to several academy graduates. However, his strategy did not pay off, and the Belgian side secured a memorable victory.
Union Saint-Gilloise took the lead thanks to the outstanding performance of Mohamed Amoura. He raced past Liverpool's defensive line, eluded goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and fired into an empty net to open the scoring. Jarell Quansah equalised for the Reds when he tapped in a rebound from a corner, scoring his first goal for the club. Cameron Puertas put Union Saint-Gilloise back in front at the end of the first half with a powerful low shot past Kelleher. Despite Puertas seemingly extending the home side's lead just after the hour mark, the VAR intervened and disallowed the goal.
The defeat raises questions about some Liverpool players looking to impress Klopp, as the manager opted to field the youngest starting XI in the club's history in European competition. Liverpool's young talents were given a valuable opportunity, but the experience resulted in an adverse result that leaves some players with work to do to earn a place in the main team.
The player who had a bad night was junior Luke Chambers who did not make a good mark on Saint Gilloise's first goal at left-back. This caused Jurgen Klopp to substitute him and he will hardly be given a chance again as for now there will be no more less demanding games and Andy Robertson is expected to return soon so there will be no more chances for him.
