Liverpool's Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez did not train with his team-mates on Thursday ahead of Saturday's game against Brighton. According to journalist Neil Jones, the South American has a minor problem, but that would prevent him from taking part in the match against the Seagulls, so the German coach Jurgen Klopp will have to make changes.

Nunez's absence from Saturday's Premier League Round 20 clash with Brighton will give Dutch striker Cody Gakpo the chance to finally make his debut in the world's biggest league, after making his debut in the FA Cup.

As such, several local media have reported that Gakpo's reaction has been one of excitement at the prospect of making his Premier League debut after arriving as a star striker from PSV following a great World Cup in Qatar with the Netherlands national team.

Darwin Nunez has scored ten goals for Liverpool, although the one he scored against Wolverhampton in the FA Cup was his first of 2023. With this goal, he already has more goals than Erling Haaland so far this season. However, Nunez has been ridiculed for all his failings in matches after the World Cup in Qatar.

Gakpo to be centre forward

All reports are that in the absence of Nunez, Gakpo will be the starting centre forward for German coach Jurgen Klopp. He will be joined up front by Egyptian kingpin Mohamed Salah and Oxlade Chamberlain who despite the fact that he could leave the team at the end of the season, has featured as a starter in recent games.
