After the Reds agreed an £85.5 million plus add-ons deal with Benfica this summer for Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez, his arrival at the Merseyside outfit promised to be the quick fix to the sale of their former Senegalese star Sadio Mané, but unfortunately for the young striker and Jurgen Klopp things turned out differently as the player has been unable to perform at all, a situation that has generated endless criticism for his poor football.

With only two goals since moving to Anfield, the Uruguayan striker was looking to turn things around in the third round of the UEFA Champions League where he started against Rangers, but despite having certain advantages in front of goal, he could not do anything and ended up missing at least a couple of clear goals against goalkeeper Allan McGregor, concluding another poor night that for his good fortune was not severely criticized by his fans who decided to surround him with applause as he left the field.

Such situations have prompted former Everton striker Kevin Campbell to speak out and explain some of the problems why he believes Nunez has not been able to excel at Anfield as he did at Benfica, with a lack of time to adapt to the Premier League being the main reason he sees for the new star under the German tactician. "Sometimes it takes six months to adapt. Jürgen Klopp has the team to change things."

Bringing him in to be the team's new star in attack with the freshness of Sadio Mané's departure was one of the most wrong decisions the club made early on with this striker, at least that's how Campbell, who knows the demands and standards of such an institution like Liverpool, sees it. "This is one of the problems when you go to a club like Liverpool with the levels they expect you to be at.

Lack of adaptation, the problem for Núñez

For the time being, Darwin Núñez must continue to concentrate on adapting to English football and above all on being able to fully understand the orders that Jurgen Klopp gives him both in training and in matches, as communication and an early return to Liverpool will make him a competitive man who will be able to carry the team on his shoulder and compete against the elite of strikers that today is led by Erling Haaland.
