Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk is still recovering and will be out for at least a month with a hamstring injury, German manager Jürgen Klopp confirmed. The Dutch captain came off at half-time in the 3-1 defeat to Brentford in Round 19 and subsequently underwent an MRI scan.

"The diagnosis was tough and we are thinking weeks, more than a month, but hopefully it will pass quickly," Klopp told a news conference. The German boss replaced Van Dijk with Joel Matip for the clash against Brentford as a precaution and does not expect bad news.

"It was a surprise for us. Obviously it was a hard knock. He didn't feel anything," Klopp added. The Liverpool manager subsequently reported that they do not expect Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk to return for the UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid.

Rhys Williams returns to Liverpool

The owners have decided to react to Van Dijk's long-term injury and want to reinforce the defensive backline with the arrival of a player who left recently and today is having a great level at Blackpool in League One. Rhys Williams is an English defender who is doing well in the Championship, where he is one of the stars of the league and especially of his club Blackpool, where he arrived in 2022 after a loan from Liverpool who sought his growth as a professional player. The 21-year-old Williams joined Liverpool's youth academy in 2019, where he soon began to attract interest from a number of youth scouts.
