England's double-edged sword at the World Cup

Sven-Goran Eriksson's experience of coaching several European teams and national teams has given him the necessary experience to be able to identify the main qualities of his charges over the years, and he has recommended to England coach Gareth Southgate what to do with such a vital element in the defence that he now plays for Liverpool.

With just a couple of warm-up games before the World Cup kicks off in Qatar on Sunday 20 November, there is much talk in the England camp about who should be the first-choice right-back, with the likes of Keiran Trippier, Kyle Walker, Reece James and Alexander-Arnold himself all in the same position.

Although Manchester City star Kyle Walker has been one of Southgate's most favoured players at the moment, Eriksson set out his possible solution if he were in charge of the Three Lions, quickly opting for Liverpool's Alexander-Arnold as he sees him as the aggressive full-back that England will need when the tough opposition arrive and a place in the next round is at stake.

After Erikson highlighted Arnold's ferocity up front and his incredible right-footed shot, the same Swedish tactician also pointed out one of the main shortcomings he sees in the 23-year-old Briton: defending, which he does not handle very well, as when he is in red and under the orders of coach Jurgen Klopp, his role has constantly been offensive rather than defensive.

The No 66 shirt at Anfield could therefore be seen as a double-edged sword at the World Cup in Qatar following comments made by Sven-Goran Eriksson on BoyleSports World Cup Betting. England must now continue their preparations for the UEFA Nations League, where they will be looking to beat both Italy and Germany to move off the bottom of the table with two points from a possible 12.
