Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League standings after a 2-0 win away to Burnley on Tuesday in a match that was full of refereeing controversy and where poor decisions by Paul Tierney and the VAR prevented the scoreline from being more comprehensive.

The score was opened in the first half by the Uruguayan Darwin Nunez who broke a streak of 12 games without scoring and almost 700 minutes without being able to get on the scoreboard taking advantage of a great assist from the Dutch attacker Cody Gakpo who from the left flank assisted the Uruguayan and this one defined with a powerful shot with his right leg.

Then came the first refereeing controversy as a goal by Cody Gakpo himself was disallowed due to an alleged foul by Darwin Núñez and although the replay did not show a clear image the referee and the VAR decided to disallow it so the score remained 1-0. Then in the second half there was another disallowed goal for Liverpool and this time it had been chalked off by Harvey Elliott for an alleged offside by Mohamed Salah although the Egyptian was not involved in the play.

The win

In the closing stages of the game, Portuguese striker Diogo Jota came on to take advantage of a great assist from Colombian Luis Diaz and with a powerful shot with his left foot scored the definitive 2-0. The win took Liverpool's tally to 52 points and put them top of the table as they await Arsenal's game against West Ham on Thursday, when they could move back into first place.
