After the substantial improvements that Darwin Núñez had shown since he became a Liverpool player made not only Jurgen Klopp but also all of Uruguay think that this could be the most outstanding and prolific World Cup for the South Americans as they had a young striker that reminded a lot of the good times of Luis Suarez, but unfortunately things were not like that and the Reds striker along with his teammates consummated a great failure by not even advancing from the group stage.
If the criticism that Núñez received during his first weeks as a Liverpool player became a situation that undermined the South American's game, the elimination of his national team in the first three games of the World Cup competition will obviously be more difficult to digest, completely demoralising a player who had that illusion intact of having a good first World Cup.
Klopp forgets Ronaldo, wants Portuguese who is shining at the World Cup
While Cristiano Ronaldo makes a fool of himself, Nunez shines for Uruguay
Playing on the last day of the tournament against Ghana, Darwin Núñez had the idea of being the player of the match and to some extent equate himself to what Suarez, Cavani and Abreu did in 2010 against the same opponent, and although he could not score in the 80 minutes he was on the field, things seemed to go perfectly with that 2-0 in favour of the South Americans, suddenly changing things with that victory that South Korea consummated against Portugal.
Unfortunately Nunez was left out in the group stage and was the only Liverpool player in Qatar who could not advance to the next round, having a lot to assimilate in these days of holiday where he will have to shake off that pressure and frustration to return to Merseyside where Jurgen Klopp is surely waiting for him with a series of activities that make him be the same player of a few weeks ago, because the German tactician needs all his support for the end of the year in the Premier League where they aim to climb a couple of positions and be very close to those European positions.
Having consummated the biggest failure in his professional career, Núñez will have to work hard and be as well prepared as possible to face a new challenge in a few months in the UEFA Champions League where he will face Real Madrid in the round of 16, and he should already make a feedback from this World Cup to absorb as much experience as possible and not make mistakes that could cost the Reds their early elimination from the most important club competition in Europe.
