Uruguay share World Cup group H with Portugal, Ghana and South Korea, who will be the Charrúas' first opponents in Qatar. Neither the opponents in this first phase, nor the rest of the teams participating in the tournament scare Darwin Núñez, who in his appearance before the media on Tuesday made it clear that Uruguay's objective "is to win the World Cup".

"The feeling is very nice for me and for everyone. We want to go far, our goal is to win the World Cup. We know we're not favourites, but we're going to give a fight to any other team," said Darwin Nunez, for whom Liverpool paid 75 million euros plus 25 million euros in variable fees last summer.

Nunez arrives at the World Cup after scoring nine goals in 18 games for Liverpool, where he endured a difficult period of adaptation: "It took me a while to adapt at Liverpool, but I think now I'm understanding more about the game my team-mates are playing. I think I'm more adapted to what the coach is asking for and when I get to play I try to do my best.

The experience of participating in a World Cup is exciting for Nunez, who "four years ago I was watching it on TV". "Now I'm here and I'm happy, obviously. Now I have to keep working, this has just begun for me and always with humility and with my feet on the ground, because with that you can always go far. The fundamental thing was to work in silence, with humility. The support of the people who surround you and love you is fundamental. My girlfriend and my son are my strength at the moment," said the Liverpool striker.

Nunez wants to transcend with Uruguay

Although he is ambitious in his World Cup aspirations, Darwin made it clear that the first objective is to beat South Korea in the opener: "Our objective is clear, but it starts from the first game and that's the first objective. We want to go there, win it and take the three points. South Korea are a very strong team, they're in the World Cup for a reason, but so are we and we're going to put up a fight".
