Liverpool moved up to second place in the English Premier League standings with a 3-1 win at Anfield over Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez's West Ham on Sunday in Round 6 of the Premier League. The win left Liverpool (16 points) just two points behind leaders Manchester City (18 points), who beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 despite being a man down for half the game on Saturday and are now on a six-game winning streak.

Liverpool's 3-1 win over the Hammers came in the second half. In the first, Mohamed Salah had given Liverpool the lead in the 16th on a penalty and Jarrod Bowen had equalised in the 42nd for the visitors. Meanwhile, Mexico's Edson Alvarez started for West Ham, played all 90 minutes and was shown a yellow card after 36 minutes for an ill-timed tackle on Colombian Luis Diaz.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead again in the 60th minute with a perfect South American connection, Uruguay's Darwin Nunez scoring after an assist from Argentina's Alexis MacAllister. The final goal came in the 85th minute through Portugal's Diogo Jota. While Liverpool's attack responded again, the defence continued to show signs of concern. Symbolic of this was West Ham's goal, with Bowen catching captain Virgil Van Dijk, returning from suspension. One of the best performers in this match was Curtis Jones, who has earned a starting place in midfield by benching newcomers such as Ryan Gravenberch and Japan's Wataru Endo, who were tipped to be star performers in the team, but now have to wait for their chance.

What Jones said

"I've been out of the team for a while, then I came back and got injured again, so now I'm at a point where I want to play every game and help the team as much as I can. The confidence has always been there. I had a bad time last season when I got poked in the eye and was out for 10 weeks because the doctor said I couldn't train or play. I came back, but in a team like ours there are guys who go out to play and score goals. The new guys that have come into the team have given us a bigger push and that allows me to play a bit more freely and take up the spaces where I want to play. That's what I'm doing and I'm just trying to keep it up."
