Champions League - Liverpool's first meeting with Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Rangers

Liverpool face Rangers in the first leg at Anfield on 4 October and a week later they meet again on 12 October to complete their Champions League group stage run. This match will be the first time the two clubs have met in an official fixture.

The Scottish side return to the group stage of the European competition for the first time since 2010-11, when they finished third in a group that also included Manchester United, Valencia and Bursaspor.

After finishing runners-up to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership last season, Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side - who lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final in May - entered the Champions League in the third qualifying round.

Rangers came from 2-0 down at Ibrox in the first leg to beat Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise 3-2 on aggregate, thanks to a penalty from captain James Tavernier and goals from Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman. Their reward was a play-off against PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch side drew 2-2 in Glasgow in the first leg, before Colak scored the goal that gave Rangers the decisive 1-0 win in the second leg in Holland.

"Rangers are a new opponent for us, but we also know them. Their history in recent years has been really interesting and they did very, very well to qualify for the group stage, considering the teams they faced in the qualifiers," he said.

"Also, we know a couple of their players well. Ryan Kent has developed a lot since he moved to Scotland and Ben Davies is just starting his career with Rangers, so it will be good to play them," he added.
