SKY Sports legend and now SKY Sports commentator Jamie Carragher once again set social media alight when he quoted a tweet from ESPN FC as saying that the president of French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is calling for greater transparency in the summer transfer dealings of FC Barcelona, demanding a UEFA investigation.
For Carragher, these statements by Nasser Al-Khelaifi are ironic and absurd, given that PSG has been in the eye of the storm for years, being one of the clubs that has spent the most, and has even had problems with "Fair Play", due to the accumulation of a deficit of more than 30 million euros in the last three financial years that UEFA has requested from the teams in Europe.
Klopp's good news ahead of Liverpool's month of madness
This summer FC Barcelona spent around 153 million euros on star signings such as Kessie, Christensen, Koundé, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, the latter two being the most expensive at 55 and 50 million euros respectively. This is why Nasser Al-Khelaifi is calling for an investigation into this as the Catalan side closed the 2020-2021 financial year with an operating loss of 481 million euros.
Jamie Carragher, in his capacity as a sports commentator, also sarcastically hinted that there are other clubs that UEFA should investigate, "UEFA should investigate FC Barcelona, but they're probably busy investigating a couple of clubs at the moment," the former Red's defender said on Twitter.
The Englishman's tweet sparked comments from users, some in favour of him and others against, for example Catalan fans, where they justify FC Barcelona's efforts to try to correct the mistakes the club made in past seasons. Others defend Carragher's position, saying that UEFA has its "favourites" for this type of investigation.
