Liverpool's reaction proved insufficient to avoid a 3-2 defeat away to Toulouse in the Europa League on Thursday, a day that was nonetheless victorious for Colombian striker Luis Diaz. Diaz's father was released hours before the match after being held hostage in northern Colombia by members of the National Liberation Army. Diaz had asked the guerrillas to end his father's captivity after scoring in Sunday's Premier League match wearing a T-shirt that read "Freedom for Dad". On Thursday, Diaz did not score but tested Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes with a low shot from outside the box in the first half.

Aron Dønnum scored in the first half and Thijs Dallinga extended the deficit just before the hour mark for the home side, who had been crushed 5-1 at Anfield a fortnight ago. An own goal from Venezuelan Cristian Cásseres made it 2-1 after 74 minutes, but Frank Magri quickly restored the two-goal advantage. Diogo Jota came on for Diaz in the 81st minute and scored eight minutes later. Liverpool thought they had equalised in stoppage time, but Jarell Quansah's shot was disallowed by VAR.

This was Jürgen Klopp's 450th match in charge of Liverpool. Before the match, Klopp had said that Diaz was "really happy with the news of his father's release. After the game, he was less happy with his team's performance. "It was well deserved this defeat because they won practically all the decisive battles," Klopp commented. "We had too many situations where we should have won the ball but we didn't." Liverpool lead Group E with nine points from four games. Toulouse are second, two points behind.

Carragher's anger

The one who was furious after Liverpool's VAR fiasco against Toulouse was legend Jamie Carragher who, in his column for The Teleghraph, made a scathing criticism of VAR, claiming that it is ruining football, and that a major overhaul is needed to benefit the sport.
