Benítez is one of the best managers in Liverpool's history

The history of Liverpool and Rafa Benítez is one of the most beautiful in the memory of all Reds fans, because under the Spaniard's command our club achieved the most epic comeback in the history of Champions League finals, which was the "Miracle of Istanbul". That is why Benitez became an authoritative voice when it came to making transfers.

In 2007, Benítez set his sights on an attacker of great qualities and qualities that dazzled in South American football and on whom he had great expectations, as he firmly believed that this youngster would become Liverpool's next star and that very soon Anfield would chant his name and he would become a legend of the club.

We are talking about Sebastián Leto, an Argentine left winger who at just 20 years of age was signed by Liverpool from Lanús. Leto arrived under the banner of being the next star of world football, but a series of problems prevented him from becoming the player Rafa Benitez always believed he could be. First, Leto had problems with his work visa in England, so he was unable to play with the team for more than four games and had to go on loan to Greece.

In Greece he showed good qualities, but the problems with his work visa were not solved so he never played for Liverpool again and ended up being sold for 4 million euros to Panathinaikos. Leto had a 12-year professional career, in which he was never able to consolidate himself in elite football, because after leaving Liverpool he suffered a lot with injuries and finally retired in 2017 in the United Arab Emirates league.

What Leto could have been for Liverpool

Sebastián Leto arrived with the expectation of being Liverpool's next big star, and instead he was only able to play 4 games for the Reds, in which he was unable to score a single goal. "He was a player with enormous potential, quite fast, more than interesting in one-on-one play, with good technique and a good shot. Above all, he was a player capable of unbalancing and with an excellent vision of the game. We had no choice but to sell him abroad. It was not what we had in mind for him, but we had to accept the decision as it came. There is no more", Rafa Benítez said a few years ago.
