Manchester United legend Gary Neville said the struggling club, which lost and was humiliated 3-0 to Manchester City on Sunday, was a "graveyard of players". Neville, who is a commentator on Sky Sports, sharply criticised the structure of a club that has not won the Premier League for a decade and was thrashed last time out by neighbours Manchester.
"Every manager that comes to Manchester United, we start to think there's a problem with him at some point. When we think about players we buy for 50, 60 or 70 million, even who have been wanted by other teams but have gone for United, it ends up being a graveyard for them." "There is a culture of toxicity and negativity around the club that won't go away. Erik Ten Hag is a fantastic coach, we can't doubt that. Jose Mourinho is a great coach, we can't deny that either. What you have to think about is why they don't succeed at this club. That's the question.
Neville's criticism of United's current form led him to claim that even the so-called Class of 92, which included David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and himself, would not work for this team either. "As talented as that group was, if we came in in this environment, we would have failed, so I don't blame these players," he said. After ten Premier League games, Manchester United are eighth on 15 points, eleven points off the top of the table.
As Neville attacks his team, the Liverpool legend had this to say about the Reds' performance: I think [Manchester City] will win the league comfortably this season. I do! I don't think Liverpool are quite ready to mount a serious challenge."
