Liverpool matched their biggest ever Premier League thrashing at Anfield by nine goals to nil against AFC Bournemouth to claim the first three points in the competition in stunning fashion. Summer signing Fabio Carvalho explained how the foundations of the performance and result were laid amid frustration at Monday's defeat at Manchester United.
"From Monday's game we knew what we had to do the next game to get the three points. It started from training on Tuesday, where from the first moment training started I knew something was going to happen because of the mentality, the desire and how well we trained," Carvalho said.
Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk gave Liverpool a five-goal half-time lead when Carvalho came on as a substitute. An own goal was followed by another from Firmino, a lovely volley from Carvalho to open his account for the Reds and then Diaz's second of the game.
Carvalho jumped for joy after scoring his first-time goal into the bottom corner after an assist from Kostas Tsimikas. The Portugal Under-21 international dedicated the moment to the fans for the support he has received since swapping Fulham for Anfield in July.
"You can see from my celebration that I didn't really know what to do, I just jumped up and down and I was happy, celebrating. I just wanted to give something back to the fans because they have helped me a lot since I arrived, they have shown me a lot of love. I hope I can show them how grateful I am with my performances and goals," commented Carvalho.
