Liverpool are set to lose manager Julian Ward this summer after he decided to leave the club after just one year in the role. According to English media reports, Ward will leave Liverpool a year after Michael Edwards, who served as sporting director since 2016, also made the decision to leave the Anfield outfit.

Ward has been at Liverpool for a decade, but it wasn't until Edwards' departure that he took on the sporting director's role alone. The news comes in a slightly unsettled climate at Liverpool, with the club out of Champions League positions and the potential sale of the club in the air, after Fenway Sports Group said it was open to new investors and even a sale.

He has been an integral part of rebuilding a club that won the Champions League again in 2019 and won its first league title in 30 years in 2020. Edwards has been at the club since 2011, and his talent for spotting promise and negotiating signings has helped the red side return to success to celebrate. Julian Ward, his assistant, will take over when his predecessor leaves the club.

Three names stand out among the transfers made by Michael Edwards. Three key players who have grown to be among the best in the world: Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson. But there are more, such as full-back Andy Robertson, who joined from Hull City in the summer of 2017. The list is extensive: Naby Keita, Fabinho, Diogo Jota.

He also showed a flair for negotiations in the sale of Phillipe Coutinho. Barcelona had long tracked the Brazilian star, who ended up moving to Camp Nou in January 2018 after the Catalan club paid €135m for the attacker. Edwards also agreed to a payment of 90m if the Blaugrana had intentions of taking any players from Liverpool before 2021, in addition to the price stipulated during negotiations for the hypothetical player.
