German Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp "reveals unknown details" about his attempted move to Borussia Dortmund for a player who "in the end decided to join Real Madrid". In an exclusive interview with Norwegian channel TV 2, the German coach explains his frustrated attempt at Borussia Dortmund to sign Martin Odegaard, the current Arsenal star who faces Liverpool, and his special relationship with the Norwegian midfielder.

"Odegaard really likes me. It's easy these days. It was a bit more difficult at the beginning of his career when he was at Real Madrid. Then it looked like he might not find his way. That disappointed me a lot, because we wanted him at Dortmund when he was very young," Klopp explained to TV 2.

Klopp admits that "we had a long conversation when Martin Odegaard was still a boy, together with his father (Hans Erik Odegaard). In the end he decided for Real Madrid, and that's fine, but that's why I've always followed him." Martin Odegaard, who made his international debut for Norway in 2014 as a 15-year-old, signed for Real Madrid on 22 January 2015 from Stromsgodset after a media-rich world tour to see first-hand the plans of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Manchester and Arsenal.

"You can't imagine how many talents, great talents, I have seen over the course of many years in this business. At that time, Martin was 15 years old and already playing in the Norwegian Eliteserien. The whole world went crazy," Klopp recalls. "I'm not sure, you have to ask him, but maybe I was too honest that time," Klopp says of the Odegaard meeting in 2015.

Klopp wanted to take a player away from Real Madrid

"I told him he was still a kid, still going to school, all those things. We wanted to create an environment where he could grow and develop," the former Borussia Dortmund man explained. If you compare the city of Dortmund and the city of Madrid, maybe he would make the same decision. "I'm very happy that he has now become the player we all hoped he would become. Actually, even better than that, so to speak. He has an important role in an incredibly strong Arsenal. He's still young, lucid, very influential. Honestly, I can't say anything negative about him. He really is a top player," he analysed. Klopp joked.
