England and Scotland will replay the oldest football derby in the history of the game on Tuesday. The two teams will meet at Hampden Park Stadium in a friendly match organised to celebrate, belatedly, the 150th anniversary (last year) of the first match between two football teams. As a tribute, the captains of the teams (Harry Kane and Andy Robertson) posed in a nice retro production in the run-up to the match.

On 30 November 1872, the two sides played out that famous 0-0 draw on a cricket pitch in Patrick, west of Glasgow. It marked the kick-off of a classic clash, as well as being the first international match in the history of the sport. On one side, the inventors of football. On the other, the first to understand it. For the rustic English style was countered by the famous Scottish "passing game". In time, the Scottish teachers, in allusion to the Scottish coaches, were recognised as the creators of football tactics.

In this FIFA matchday, both teams have just reaffirmed their leadership of their respective Euro 2024 qualification groups. Scotland, away to Cyprus, beat them 3-0 to top Group A with 15 points, closely followed by Spain, who have six points (although with two games in hand). England, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Ukraine last Saturday and lead Group C with 13 points, six more than their last opponents but with a game in hand.

Special game

As well as being a derby, Liverpool's Andy Robertson will have a special duel in Tuesday's game as he will be reunited with former team-mate Jordan Henderson who is expected to start for England. The pair have not seen each other since the midfielder left Anfield. The defender will surely forget the respect for Henderson and will be looking to beat England after many years.
