Virgil van Dijk fouled Aleksandar Mitrovic during Liverpool's draw with Fulham.

Former Chelsea player Andy Townsend commented on the game at Craven Cottage and gave his verdict on the penalty decision. Townsend believes that while Virgil Van Dijk may not have defended well, he said Aleksandar Mitrovic's was a clear "dive".

The Reds drew 2-2 against Fulham, dropping points in the title race. Second-half goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah helped the Reds earn a point in west London.

Fulham's two goals came from Mitrovic, one in each half, the second a penalty. Referee Andy Madley gave the home side a penalty after Virgil van Dijk was adjudged to have fouled Mitrovic in the box. "I saw Van Dijk say to the referee 'no chance' and it looked like Mitrovic went down a bit easy, to me," Townsend told Talksport.

Madley's analysis

"Does he offer a leg towards Van Dijk? I'm not sure if he touches him, but either way it's not good defending." I didn't see much contact and if there's no contract you can't give it. To me it looks like a pooling. He didn't touch it. The referee has to have a look at the monitor. If there is a serious doubt about whether that was a penalty, he simply has to look at the monitor."

"It's a controversial penalty, I didn't see much contact. I'd like to hear the talk between the referees. We should be able to do that. Nobody on this ground had any idea what was going on, so we should do that."
