With the end of the season drawing ever closer for the Premier League, Liverpool know that their chances of qualifying for the next edition of the UEFA Champions League are becoming increasingly difficult, and while the Reds have put a run of poor results behind them to record back-to-back wins, with 50 points they are still far from being in contention for a place in the continent's top club competition.
After the hard-fought win at Anfield against Nottingham Forest, the group led by coach Jurgen Klopp has only seven games left to improve their position in the overall standings and become a Champions League team for their next campaign starting in August, mainly needing no more defeats or draws that make them fall behind the rest, because as the numbers of the institutions just ahead and below the Merseyside team are, a point makes the difference between saving or ruining a whole year.
At the moment Liverpool have little chance of qualifying for the Champions League on their own, needing draws and defeats from the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham and Aston Villa, with the chance of overtaking Spurs and the Villans they face in the coming weeks, and waiting for the Hurricanes to fail to get into the top four on points or goal difference.
Although the situation is favourable for the Merseyside side and they can climb further up the Champions League table, Klopp and his players must also hope that Brighton have a bad night in the Premier League and cannot win their remaining games, and while the Reds can still get 21 points, the Seagulls are aiming for 27, and could knock down those chances in this final stretch, making it clear that the only certain formula to get that ticket to the European competition is not to make mistakes and wait for the failures.
