PSG striker Kylian Mbappé waived part of his contract bonuses worth "several tens" of millions of euros, according to a deal struck with the French club at the start of the season, a source involved in the negotiation said. According to that source, the figure for those bonuses amounts to between 60 and 70 million euros ($65.6 to $76 million), somewhat financially covering PSG in case Mbappé finally leaves the club in June, when his contract expires and he is free to leave without a transfer fee.
As of Monday, six months before the end of his contract, Mbappé is free to join another club if he so wishes with next season in mind. Several media spoke of other sums. Le Parisien newspaper reported that Mbappé waived a "loyalty" bonus of 80 million euros ($87.5 million) that he should have received in September, to which would be added other concepts that would have raised that eventual payment to almost 100 million euros ($109 million).
"With the agreement I concluded with the president this summer, my decision matters little. We have managed to protect all parties and preserve the tranquility of the club in the face of the challenges ahead, that's the most important thing," said Kylian Mbappé in the mixed zone after PSG won the French Super Cup (Trophée des Champions), pointing out that he had not made a "decision" about his future. By agreeing to waive part of the bonuses, the attacker can allow Paris Saint-Germain to save some amounts that would compensate in some way for an eventual departure of the player with the letter of freedom.
"We laugh about it," Klopp told Sky Germany in August following yet more links. "I can say that I think he's a really good player but the financial conditions don't suit us at all. I wouldn't like to ruin the story now... but as far as I know, there's nothing to it. "It's possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me... that hasn't happened in the eight years that I've been here. That would be the first time."
