Benitez claimed to have inside information about what is going on at Anfield

The former manager claims that his contacts still share with him qualified information about what is going on inside the club. Last Friday, the whole Liverpool world went into a frenzy after Jurgen Klopp's announcement, in which the German manager told fans, players and officials that he would be stepping down at the end of the season. And now, a former manager of the club, the Spanish Rafa Benítez, has hinted that "there is something else" behind this announcement.

Following Klopp's announcement, two players leave Liverpool in less than a day

Speaking on British television, Rafa Benitez, who spent six years in charge of Liverpool between 2004 and 2010, claimed to have inside information about what is going on at Anfield: "I have an advantage, and that is that I have people at Liverpool and also people at the club," he explained. For that reason, the Spaniard said he was not surprised by last Friday's announcement "more or less, I know how it all came about", he acknowledged and hinted that Klopp's departure hides more than what we know: "There is something else that I know from the inside, and it has more merit than being there", he said.

Given this, Rafa Benítez suggests that the fifteen uninterrupted years between his six at Dortmund and nine at Liverpool, which Klopp blamed for his "wear and tear" and "lack of energy", would not be the only reason for his departure. Despite dropping this suggestion, Rafa Benitez also acknowledged that he has a close relationship with the German: "I only have positive words about Klopp, because he is my friend and I have a good relationship with him," he explained.

And he praised him for his actions: "He [Klopp] goes and speaks in public, which gives the club time to reorganise, which from another perspective, I consider very German. Because they are about giving notice with notice," he said. In closing, Rafa Benítez said: "He has done and continues to do a tremendous job. All I can say about Klopp and Liverpool is positive," a testament to the great relationship between Liverpool's last two great managers, both of whom won the Champions League with the Reds.
