Wataru Endo and His Impact at Liverpool: Adaptation and Winning Mentality

Since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2023, Wataru Endo has become a key player for the team. Arriving from Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, the Japanese midfielder strengthened the Reds' midfield and quickly gained the trust of his teammates and coaching staff.

A Successful Season at Anfield

Endo played 43 matches across all competitions during his debut season, 29 of them in the Premier League. He played a pivotal role in key moments, including the Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea at Wembley, Jürgen Klopp's last trophy as Liverpool manager. His performances also contributed to Liverpool securing a third-place finish in the league and a return to the Champions League.

Initially seen as a defensive midfielder, Endo has showcased his versatility by occasionally featuring as a centre-back under the management of Arne Slot, who took over as head coach last summer.

A Clear Philosophy and Defined Role

Endo describes his playing style as pragmatic and team-focused:"I think, defensively, it’s about recovering the ball and maintaining good organisation in the midfield. I always try to help my teammates play well; that’s my strength."

Speaking about his role on the pitch, Endo added:"If I play as a number six, I have to do the dirty work. I need a good connection with the defenders and also support my teammates in attack. I try to keep it simple, play forward, and switch sides when necessary."

The Intensity of the Premier League

Adapting to the Premier League was no easy task, as Endo admitted in the Red Machine podcast:"The Premier League is very tough. It took me time to adapt, but playing at Liverpool means even the training sessions are highly intense. We train the way we play, and that has made me stronger."

With unwavering work ethic and a team-first mentality, Wataru Endo continues to establish himself as a vital part of Liverpool. His ability to adapt and his commitment to the team point to a bright future in the seasons ahead.
