WHAT HAPPENED?
The Reds suffered back-to-back defeats last week against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final as they saw their dream of winning a treble shattered in the space of just five days. However, the Merseyside club remain the clear favorites to win the Premier League title, enjoying a 12-point lead at the top of the table. Following the double disappointment, club captain Van Dijk has urged his teammates to ensure the season ends with a trophy.
WHAT VIRGIL VAN DIJK SAID
Speaking to reporters after the defeat at Wembley, Van Dijk said: "We have to turn this around. That's how football works: in five days you lose twice and the world collapses. Two weeks before that it was all sunshine and rainbows all around. We couldn't do it in the Champions League, we lost this and it knocked us out of the FA Cup. We have nine games left and I don't think you need motivation to try and get the job done.
"You're playing for the biggest prize, which you've been working so hard for since the start of the season. Nobody expected us to be competing for the Premier League. It's the hardest prize to achieve. There's so much at stake. There are so many positive and good things to be excited about. We have to work hard for it. Now everyone goes to their respective countries, plays there, hopefully stays fit, and then we prepare for Everton at home (on April 2), which is going to be difficult."
THE BIG PICTURE
The Dutchman also provided an update on his future at Anfield, saying: "There will be news before the end of the season. As long as I'm fully committed and have my full attention on the task at hand, and I love the club, that's the main thing. That's who I am."
WHAT'S NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?
Arne Slot's side will return to action after the international break on April 2 when they face arch-rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.
