With an inspired performance from Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez, Liverpool rallied in the second half to score two goals in the space of three minutes to beat Fulham 2-1 in the English League Cup semi-finals on Wednesday. After Middlesbrough beat Chelsea 1-0 in the first semi-final on Tuesday, another upset appeared to be in the making when Fulham took the lead at Anfield through Brazilian Willian's goal after 19 minutes. In the move, Virgil van Dijk failed to head clear.
Liverpool's firepower was dented in the first half by the absence of injured Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, who has been called up by Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations. Nunez and Cody Gakpo came on in a double substitution after 55 minutes that proved decisive. Nunez had a hand in both goals for the hosts and Gapko scored one. After a perfect pass from Nunez, Curtis Jones levelled the score with a shot that deflected off Tosin Adarabioyo's back and caught goalkeeper Bernd Leno by surprise in the 68th minute.
Nunez put in the cross, which Gapko sent into the net in the 71st minute to give Liverpool the lead heading into the second leg at Fulham's Craven Cottage Stadium on Jan. 24. The Reds could have taken a bigger margin into the trip to London, but Leno denied Nunez in the 89th minute. The victory came three days after another second-half comeback at Arsenal, where Liverpool won 2-0 in the FA Cup.
After his great performance in the League Cup semi-final, Darwin Nunez made a post on his social media causing a stir among Liverpudlian fans. Darwin Nunez has become one of the darlings of Anfield due to his commitment and also his contributions in attack, reaching ten assists for the season.
