Liverpool looks like champions. The Anfield team shines like no other: a superb thrashing of Tottenham in London with doubles from its top players and with that it is more leader than ever of the Premier League. The Reds' performance in this first part of the 24-25 season is simply sensational.
On December 22, Arne Slot's team had a tough test ahead of them in the local competition, as they visited one of the revelations of the championship: Tottenham Hotspur. However, what seemed like a close match in the English capital, ended up being a goal festival by the hand of the Colombian Luis Díaz and the star Mohamed Salah.
Both attackers reported with doubles, thus scoring four of the six goals of their team in London territory, while the local team could barely reduce the gap through Maddison, Kulusevski and Solanke. In this order of ideas, it was a superb 3-6 that left Liverpool with 39 points, surpassing Chelsea by 4 and Arsenal by 6.
Slot, excited by the victory, but calm with Lucho
“It was very good, perhaps it was our best performance away from home, although I also really liked what I saw against Manchester United. It was total dominance and we also beat them many, many times, so it was also a very good game away from home,” coach Arne Slot began by saying in a press conference.
The strategist also stated that his team could have continued to go further on the scoreboard, but he is still extremely satisfied with the offensive production: “In addition to scoring six goals, I think we could have scored even more. It is always like that, not all the chances are scored, although Tottenham almost did because I think their first three opportunities were goals, and then, the fourth, luckily, did not go in.”
Finally, he referred to the figures of the match: Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz. While he appreciated the fact that they scored twice, he stressed that the most important thing was the teamwork. He even chose to highlight the work of Dominik Szoboszlai in the midfield.
“Mo (Salah) and Lucho (Diaz), both of them got two goals and perhaps they are the ones who stand out for their doubles, but I think that with that we would not do justice to Dom’s (Szoboszlai) performance if we did not name him as well because, in addition to the offensive things he did, he was good without the ball and was an important part of our game plan,” he said.
And he continued: “Yes, everyone looks at the goal scorers, but if you look again (and that is definitely what I am going to do), most of the scoring started with the centre-backs or the full-backs. I think that every step leading up to each goal, there were multiple passes. So, it is not just the ones who score, but also the ones who help create.”
