Liverpool's win over Brentford the most painful in the Klopp era

Mohamed Salah made his scoring return for Liverpool in the Premier League leaders' 4-1 thrashing of Brentford on Saturday. Salah was out for a month with a hamstring injury suffered during the Africa Cup of Nations and came on as a half-time substitute at the Gtech Community Stadium to fire home his 19th goal of the season in all competitions after 68 minutes.

Liverpool were 2-0 up at the time after Uruguay's Darwin Nunez opened the scoring on 35 minutes and Alex Mac Allister extended the lead with Salah's assist. Ivan Toney pulled Brentford closer on 75 minutes to score for the fourth time in five games since returning from an eight-month suspension for breaking betting rules.

But substitute Cody Gakpo sealed the result in the 86th minute and Liverpool provisionally extended their lead at the top of the table to five points. Although Liverpool remain in title-chasing form there are concerns for manager Jürgen Klopp because of injuries to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota in the first half. Jota had to leave the game on a stretcher.

The Merseyside club are without the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold. Thiago Alcantara and Dominik Szoboszlai, as well as goalkeeper Alisson were injured in training on Thursday and missed the game.
