Liverpool could only draw away at Luton Town earlier this season. It was one of the most frustrating results of the campaign to date, even with Luis Díaz salvaging an emotional late equalizer. This weekend, Chelsea did its best to throw away a 3-0 lead, ultimately winning 3-2 on the same ground.
Late goals from Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo were not enough to earn any points for Luton, though it has still only lost by more than a single goal twice since the start of September. The three points that Chelsea collected, though, still place them a full 14 points off the top of the table. Liverpool has a game in hand (against Newcastle United) to play as well.
Having spent way more than $1bn in three transfer windows under Todd Boehly, Chelsea has only scraped into the top half of the table after 20 games in the Premier League season. It currently sits in 10th, ahead of Wolves only on goal difference. And so far, beating Liverpool to the signatures of Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia for a combined $220m (£173m/€199m) has not paid off.
Responding to a claim from Pedro Almeida on X/Twitter that Spurs could look to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea in January for a fee of around $44m (£34m/€40m), Jamie Carragher was aghast at the latest decision that the Stamford Bridge side might make. It certainly does feel like an odd move, though talk of 'advanced talks' for a transfer might be a little premature.
The ECHO reported in April that Gallagher was under consideration for a summer transfer at Anfield. While there is no suggestion of a move being rekindled for January and signing a defender is far more important for Liverpool right now, there is an argument for taking the chance to buy Gallagher from Chelsea next month. For a relatively small fee, he could be a good squad option, as a kind of younger Jordan Henderson. Gallagher is Premier League-proven and can play in a variety of midfield positions. Alexis Mac Allister is likely the Thiago Alcântara successor but the Spaniard's place in the squad might need taking over in the summer if he leaves at the end of his contract.
