Jones Worry Amidst Liverpool's Flawless Champions League Run

Liverpool find themselves in an enviable position in the Champions League after securing their seventh consecutive win this season in the competition against Lille. They have only conceded two goals in this campaign, scored by Christian Pulisic and Jonathan David.

However, the 2-1 victory against the Ligue 1 side came with a downside: Curtis Jones limped off during the final minutes of the first half and did not reappear for the second.

Arne Slot's Explanation of Jones' Injury

"The idea was to take Ryan (Gravenberch) and Dom (Szoboszlai) off at half-time, but Curtis couldn't continue, so Dom played a little longer," Slot explained after the match. "There was a moment in the game where he said, 'Let's play five and see how it goes.' Then he said he had to come off."

Liverpool will assess Jones, but it is hoped that his substitution was just precautionary. The number 17 has suffered several unfortunate injuries throughout his career, but was just regaining his rhythm under Slot. Therefore, another absence would be a blow to both him and the Reds, whose midfield options are not limitless.

Update on Gómez and Jota's Injuries

Meanwhile, Joe Gomez still needs several weeks to recover. Slot explained before the Lille game that the centre-back is still not close to returning. Diogo Jota, although expected back sooner than Gomez, will also be on the treatment table for a while. Both players have muscle injuries, but "weeks" could mean a return sometime between mid and late February.

Overall Injury Situation at Liverpool

Liverpool.com comments: While it is not ideal to be without Jota, coupled with Liverpool facing an anxious wait to discover the extent of Jones’ problem, the overall picture regarding injuries is fairly good. Arne Slot has done a good job of managing the squad and that will need to continue with upcoming fixtures across four competitions.
