WHAT HAPPENED?

Barcelona defender and wonderkid Pau Cubarsi admitted he looks up to Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk when asked if he watches other defenders, stating he admires the Dutchman's qualities as a leader and defender. Cubarsi is yet to face Van Dijk in a competitive match.

THE BIG PICTURE

Van Dijk has firmly established himself as one of the best defenders of his generation and remains in fine form at the age of 33, showing no signs of slowing down.

On the other hand, Cubarsi has only just begun his professional career at the highest level. He turned 18 last month, but is already considered one of the best centre-backs in the world right now. It's fair to say that the La Masia graduate is well on his way to emulating Van Dijk's greatness, having become Spain's youngest ever debutant in defence.

WHAT PAU CUBARSÍ SAID

"Yes, I love watching the Premier League and I admire Van Dijk," Cubarsi told SPORT during an interview. "He has incredible physical strength and great defending. He is also a great leader. I pay a lot of attention to him."

WHAT'S NEXT FOR PAU CUBARSI?

Cubarsi will have a challenge in the coming days as Barcelona face a difficult away game against Las Palmas on Saturday 22 February, followed by the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
