Liverpool's impressive first half of the season contrasts with the situation of one of their signings: Federico Chiesa. The Italian winger, who arrived at Anfield hoping to revitalise his career, has failed to adapt and is now seeking an exit from the club.
A Failed Signing:
After a difficult period at Juventus, Liverpool saw a market opportunity in Chiesa and signed him for €13 million. The intention was to recover the player who shone at Euro 2020. However, the gamble has not paid off, and Chiesa has not found his place in Arne Slot's team.
Reasons for his Discontent:
According to Anfield Watch, Chiesa misses Italy, is not adapting to the English climate, and, most importantly, does not feel physically prepared for the pace of the Premier League. TBR Football adds that the player is "extremely frustrated" with Slot and the lack of first-team opportunities. The competition in Liverpool's attack, with players like Salah, Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, and Diogo Jota, has relegated Chiesa to a secondary role. In fact, since Slot stated in September that Chiesa "wasn't ready to play," he has only played 45 minutes in a Carabao Cup match against Southampton.
Liverpool's Priorities:
Chiesa's situation does not generate great concern within Liverpool's management. It is presumed that the club will facilitate his departure if the player so wishes. The club's current priority is focused on the renewals of three of their key players: Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold.
The Key Renewals:
Negotiations with Salah and Van Dijk appear to be well underway, with the possibility that both will sign new two-year contracts. However, Alexander-Arnold's renewal presents greater challenges. Real Madrid's interest has given the English full-back a strong negotiating position, and the player is taking his time to assess his options.
In summary:
Possible implications:
Chiesa's departure represents a setback for Liverpool, who failed to capitalise on their investment. However, the club's priority is clear: to secure the continuity of their key players. Alexander-Arnold's situation, with Real Madrid's interest in the background, will be a key issue to follow in the coming months.
