Marcelo Pitaluga, once hailed as Liverpool's next Alisson Becker, has returned to his boyhood club Fluminense. The young Brazilian goalkeeper, who joined the Reds in 2020 with high hopes, failed to break into the first team and has now been released.
Signed from Fluminense as a promising teenager, Pitaluga was seen as a long-term replacement for the club's number one. However, despite his undoubted talent, the Brazilian struggled to make an impact at Anfield. A series of loan spells at various clubs failed to provide the breakthrough he needed.
Now, Pitaluga returns to Brazil where he will initially serve as a backup to Fluminense legend Fábio. The move represents a chance for the 22-year-old to reignite his career and potentially challenge for the starting spot in the future.
